- Who was the main figure of Banabhata’ literary and biographical work? What was his main contribution in Indian history?
Answer:- Banabhata was an ancient Sanskrit scholar in Harshavardhana’s court.
Harshavardhana was the main figure of his literary and biographical work who ruled over major parts of north India and his biography is titled as ‘Harshcharita’
His contribution :-
1.Promotion of art and culture: Provided shelter to many artists and erected many stupas at different sites across India.
2.Religious tolerance:-Though he adopted Buddhism as his religion but he did not discriminate against other religions and provided provided equal treatment to all.
3.Good administration: He was able administrator, divided his kingdom in small administrative units, ensured better implementation of revenue, education, public welfare and other releted policies.
4.Diplomatic relations: He established diplomatic relation with China and promoted trade with neighbouring kingdoms. E.g Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang visited his court.
- Who was popularly known in the Hill States as the Pahari Gandhi? Briefly discuss his contribution in the freedom struggle.
Answer:- Baba Kanshi Ram, the famous freedom fighter of Hill States was popularly known as Pahari Gandhi in HP. This title was conferred upon him by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.
His contribution:-
• Participated in freedom movement with Lala Lajpat Rai, Hardayal and Sardar Ajit Singh.
• Awakened public through his patriotic poems and songs
• Participated in Tal conference of 1927 and mobilised people of Hill States towards freedom struggle
• Many times went to jail and took pledge to wear black clothes till India gets freedom on hanging of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev in 1931.
- Discuss briefly the major faults/thrust of Himachal along with their geographical extent.
Answer:- Fault is a surface along which a rock body has broken or fractured, and has been displaced, is known as a fault.
Major faults/thrusts of HP :-
1.Main Central thrust(MCT):- This fault separates the Greater Himalayas from the Lesser Himalayas.
2.Main boundary thrust(MBT):- This fault separates the Shivalik from lesser Himalayas.
3.Himalayan front thrust(HFT):- This fault separates the great Plains of India from Shivalik.
- Define kinship. Explain the degree of kinship in Sociological context.
Answer:-Kinship refers to the culturally defined relationship between individuals who are commonly thought of as having family ties and are recognised by society.
Degree of kinship:-
1.Primary kins:- Having close or direct relationships come under this category. E.g. father-son, sister-brother, husband-wife etc.
2.Secondary kins:- One’s father’s or mother’s relationships comes under this category. They are not direct relationship. E.g. father’s brothers(Chacha) mother’s brother (Mama) etc.
3.Tertiary kins:- Secondary kins of one’s primary kins come under this category. E.g. wife of brother in law etc.
- What is meant by term Dhamma? Discuss its changing connotations.
Answer:-Dhamma was the term coined by the great Emperor Ashoka to spread his welfare ideology based on ideas of Budha in 260 century BC. The word dhamma was extracted and modified from the Sanskrit word ‘Dharma’(religion).
It was a type of secular Doctrine which was based on welfare of all. Ashoka, through this policy, tried to create social harmony, religious tolerance, environment conservation, animal welfare, social and gender justice.
Changing connotations:-
• Religious intolerance. Eg. Recent Hindu-Muslim clashes of Delhi, Godhra riots of 2002, Sikh roits of 1984 etc.
• Increasing communilism, separatism, extremism, hatred etc are various examples of changing connotations of policy of Dhamma.
• Women harassment, environment gradation, self centric approach of people, polarization in politics etc.
• Materialism, ignorance of old age persons and degradation in moral values are all contrary to policy of Dhamma.
To create a just and egalitarian Society in today’s world, governments need to adopt policy like Dhamma once again.
